Woman of God:  Controller or Servant   PART 1: THE CONTROLLER

Beverly Bradley

I. INTRODUCTION

A. A primary reason to control

B. Control defined

C. Eve's temptation

Gen 3:1-6

Phil 2:3  Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.

D. What we are to control

1 Thessalonians 4:4  that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable,

Proverbs 29:11  A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.

James 3:2  We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check.

Proverbs 25:28  Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control.

E. Who is to control us

2 Corinthians 5:14-15  For Christ's love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. {15} And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.

F. The picture of a servant

Phil 2:5-8  Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: {6} Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, {7} but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. {8} And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death-- even death on a cross!

Ps 119:165  Great peace have they who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble.

II. WOMEN WHO SOUGHT TO CONTROL

A. JEZEBEL -- 1 Kings 19:2-3; 21:5-25

1 Kgs 19:2-3  So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, "May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them." {3} Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there,

1 Kgs 21:25  (There was never a man like Ahab, who sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the LORD, urged on by Jezebel his wife.

1. Character flaw

Phil 2:3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.

James 3:13-18  Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. {14} But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. {15} Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. {16} For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. {17} But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. {18} Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.

Matthew 6:27  Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life ?

2. The result

2 Kings 9:33-35  "Throw her down!" Jehu said. So they threw her down, and some of her blood spattered the wall and the horses as they trampled her underfoot. {34} Jehu went in and ate and drank. "Take care of that cursed woman," he said, "and bury her, for she was a king's daughter." {35} But when they went out to bury her, they found nothing except her skull, her feet and her hands.

B. MIRIAM -- Numbers 12:2-3

Numbers 12:2-3  "Has the LORD spoken only through Moses?" they asked. "Hasn't he also spoken through us?" And the LORD heard this. {3} (Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.)

1.  Character flaw #1

Romans 12:3  For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you.

2.  Character flaw #2

Jeremiah 29:11  For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

3. The result

Prov 31:11  Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.

Prov 18:2  A fool finds no pleasure in understanding but delights in airing his own opinions.

C. MARTHA -- Luke 10:38-42; John 11:5-45; 12:1-3

Luke 10:38-42  As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. {39} She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. {40} But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!" {41} "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, {42} but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."

John 12:1-3  Six days before the Passover, Jesus arrived at Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. {2} Here a dinner was given in Jesus' honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. {3} Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
